October 2001 Newsletter
Dear Jazz Friends,
Thanks to so many of you who
expressed concern for us here in New York. We're doing pretty well.
We're back in our apartment, though we still have to show ID to get in &
out of our neighborhood. Things are normalizing more and more every
day; taxis can now occasionally come all the way to our building, and the
checkpoints are reducing in number. The air quality varies considerably
depending on the wind, but generally it is improving also. The air
quality is the greatest concern around here. We're trying to weigh the
risk from air quality problems with the chaos of finding another place to
live and moving. We haven't decided yet just what to do.
We're taking things one day at a time.
Aaron and Anja are doing
well. In late September, Anja performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival
with a combo from La Guardia High School. The excitement of performing
there was heightened when Roy Hargrove and Branford Marsalis joined them on
two tunes.
Here are some links to photos of Anja performing in Monterey,
with Roy Hargrove looking on:

Anja
also performed at the U.S. Tennis Open on the night of the big Women's Finals
with the Williams sisters. She was one of the 20 or so trumpet players
in the front playing the trumpet fanfare. More recently, Anja has also
been sitting in with Jon Faddis and the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Allstars this
week at the Blue Note. He'll be there through Sunday night.
As for
Aaron, he has been working hard on new compositions, arrangements, and other
things. He's also staying afloat at the Manhattan School of Music,
working hard to juggle school and professional commitments. One
of these professional commitments may involve Brazilian jazz singer,
Flora Purim, who he met recently and may perform with in the early part of
next year. I'll keep you posted on that and other
developments.
Probably the most exciting news coming up is that the show
that Aaron recorded with Marian McPartland for NPR's Piano Jazz will be
airing in a couple of weeks, beginning October 23. The exact date of
airing depends on the local programming schedule. Here is a partial
listing of airing details for some cities:

If
you live outside of these areas, you can click on this link to NPR
radio stations around the country:
www.npr.org/members
This link will
help you locate NBPR stations in your area. Unfortunately, not all NPR
stations carry Piano Jazz, so you may need to check the programming schedule
of several stations in your area. The earliest his show could air is
October 23, but it could air up to 2 weeks after that.
Also, all of these
stations also have web broadcasting, so as long as you adjust for any time
change, you should be able to catch the show on the web by clicking on any of
the links listed above at the right time. But you will need to have
RealAudio installed on your computer for this to work. If you don't
have Real Audio, click on this link first, and then go to one of the links
above for a live broadcast:

"RealPlayer 8 Basic - is our free player")
Aaron has several performances
coming up. In the New York area, he'll be playing with Matt Brewer on
bass and Obed Calvaire on drums at Kavehas. The details are listed
below. He has other performances at the Blue Water Grill coming up in
late November and early December, which are also listed below.
Aaron is
also coming to Seattle next week as part of the Earshot Jazz Festival.
He'll be playing with a trio (Jeff Johnson, bass & Mark Ivester, drums)
at Tula's on Thursday, October 25, and he'll be performing solo at Brechemin
Auditorium, UW School of Music Second Floor, on Friday, October 26.
Both of the concerts should be very special. He's played with
Jeff Johnson on several occasions and recorded his third CD with him.
The interaction between the three of them should be exceptional. Coming
back to play solo piano at UW's beautiful Brechemin Auditorium the next night
should be special as well, especially since he's played there so many times
as a student. It's also the spot where he was first heard by jazz
critic Paul De Barros about 2 years ago, which led to the Seattle Times
article. That spot will have a lot of meaning for Aaron, I'm
sure.
Other performances are scheduled for Whidbey Island and Port
Townsend in December. Those details will be coming soon.
Keep
the faith, and hope to see you soon.
Take
care,
Judie
